2014 Sugar Rush: Buona Terra Cincinnati - Gelato & Crepes

We've all heard the phrase, "like a kid in a candy store," but you don't have to be a child to indulge in a smorgasbord of sweets. Join us at the Cincinnati Ballet Center for Sugar Rush on Thursday, Aug. 14th!

You'll feel like Charlie in the Chocolate Factory (minus that annoying Veruca Salt) as you explore a colorful candy extravaganza. Think Katy Perry's Candyfornia. Several local sweeteries will sample their best cupcakes, ice cream, donuts, pies, pastries and more.  Guests will vote for their favorite treat of the night — the winner will receive bragging rights and an award to display at their shop for a full year! We will also have a panel of experts handing out special recognitions for the most creative.

Whether you're a Princess Lolly or more of a Lord Licorice, there will be goodies to satisfy every sweet tooth. 
A portion of ticket proceeds will benefit Cincinnati Ballet, which presents exhilarating performances, extensive education outreach programs and top-level professional ballet training at Cincinnati Ballet Otto M. Budig Academy. Cincinnati Ballet will also be giving Sugar Rush attendees a sneak peek at this season'sThe Kaplan New Works Series, an exciting, intimate production of entirely new ballets, during the event.www.cballet.org

This event is open to all ages. Children 8 and under are free when paired with an adult paid admission. Tickets are just $15!

We  are so excited to be part of The Galloping Pig this year! The Galloping Pig is a Fundraiser supporting the Bowtie Cause by Dhani Jones, former Cincinnati Bengal and the Gen-1 Theme House at University of Cincinnati. Come out and watch some Polo and support a good cause!

Proceeds from the event will benefit SOTENI International and the University of Cincinnati Gen-1 Theme House & Program. The Gen-1 program is a nationally recognized cutting-edge University of Cincinnati initiative that promotes the academic success of first-generation Pell-eligible college students. SI is a Cincinnati-based 501(c)(3) corporation working to prevent the spread and mitigate the effects of HIV/AIDS in its four Villages of Hope in rural Kenya.

With the funds raised by the 2014 Galloping Pig, the Gen-1 Program will promote the academic success of its students by providing the opportunity for two qualified UC students to intern with SOTENI in Kenya.

National Italian-style Ice Cream Day - Buona Terra Gelato: Cincinnati

This weekend was tons of fun, we hosted a Wine & Gelato pairing event with our friends at the Unwind Wine Bar in Hyde Park, Cincinnati on Saturday.  Then on Sunday we celebrated National Ice Cream day! We serve 24 different flavors of Gelato / Sorbetto.  Yes it isn't Ice Cream per say, but it is an Italian-style of Ice Cream. Below you will see our handcrafted Oreo Gelato.  This artisan flavor continues to be our communities number 1 Favorite!

Wine & Gelato Pairing

Thanks to all who came out to the Wine & Gelato Pairing Event tonight! We had a great time at Unwind and were so thankful the rain held off. If you haven't been to Unwind, do check it out. The outdoor seating area is not like anything else in Cincinnati. The outdoor furniture is comfortable, and they even have fire pits at some of the tables. There is already talk of doing a Fall themed Wine & Gelato Pairing later in the year. Stay tuned!

Authentic French Crepes - Buona Terra Gelato & Crepes : Cincinnati

A crepe, pronounced "kreip", is basically a very thin pancake which is typically made with buckwheat flour or wheat flour. Interestingly, both crepe and pancake are of french origin and is derived from the Latin word crispa, which means curled. Crepes are considered a national dish to the french culture and originated in the northwest of France.

At Buona Terra we offer both Sweet and Savory Crepes.  Our crepe menu is seasonal however we always tend to keep most of the favorites on the menu.  Below is a picture of our Tea Time crepe which continues to be a Cincinnati favorite! It's perfect for hot days, with sweet pastry cream and fresh seasonal berries. All of our ingredients are sourced locally and are handmade in small batches to ensure the highest quality for your taste buds!

Gelato Versus Ice Cream - Buona Terra Gelato & Crepes: Cincinnati

Everyday we are asked what is the difference between Gelato and Ice Cream.  Many customers think they are exactly the same and are surprised after we tell them all of the key differences. To illustrate the difference we decided to share this awesome graphic. 

1. Gelato is low fat. The primary ingredient in gelato is milk, as oppose to cream used for making ice cream. Traditional ice cream has 18-30% fat content vs. Gelato has only 2-9% fat. And when you do eat the fat, you get to taste real strawberries and pistachio, whereas the fatty acids, triglycerides or trans fats found in ice cream block your taste buds and prevent the flavors from reaching you. 

2. Gelato has half the calories you find in ice cream. That makes a huge difference when you are trying to maintain that beach body!

3. Generally no artificial flavoring or ingredients are used to make Gelato. A basic recipe contains whole milk, cream, egg yolks and sugar. Fresh fruits, nuts and chocolate are added for flavor. You already know that eating real food is better for you. 

4. Gelato is gluten-free. If you are allergic to cakes, pies, breads and other desserts that have flour in them, your best option is Gelato. Even diabetics can consume Gelato in moderate amounts. This is because the sugars used are largely in the form of saccharose (composed of glucose and fructose) which does not raise the glycemic levels as much as say potatoes.

5. There are health benefits to eating Gelato. It contains high levels of protein, vitamin B, calcium and phosphorus. These are necessary for good health and especially important for children, seniors, pregnant women and athletes.
